On Wednesday, January 15, 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was founded by Ethel Hedgeman Lyle at Howard University in Miner Hall. Alpha Kappa Alpha, the first sorority founded by and for women of Black African descent, was founded with the purpose of cultivating high scholastic and ethical standards; promoting unity and friendship among college women; studying and helping to alleviate problems concerning girls and women; and encouraging women to maintain a progressive interest in college life. The official colors of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority are salmon pink and apple green and the official symbol is the ivy leaf.
