Nu Lambda Chapter

Gary, Indiana - Chartered: May 4, 1980

Nu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated was chartered on May 4, 1980 in Gary, IN. The city-wide chapter originally consisted of young women on the campuses of Indiana University-Northwest, Calumet College of St. Joseph, Purdue University-Calumet, and Valparaiso University. Most recently, Nu Lambda Chapter has included sorors matriculating at Indiana University-Northwest and Calumet College of St. Joseph. On May 4, 2015, Nu Lambda celebrated their 35th anniversary on the campus of Indiana University-Northwest fellowshipping with students and faculty over cake and punch. Throughout the chapter's 35 years of service to the northwest Indiana community, they have maintained a positive presence on their campuses and strived to successfully execute the sororities' international programs, along with launching service programs that are beneficial to the needs of their community.

During Nu Lambda's first decade of service, the chapter participated in tutoring programs to lend their collegiate knowledge to under privileged youth. In addition to tutoring, Nu Lambda began to nurture a strong partnership with their sponsoring graduate chapter, Gamma Psi Omega. Nu Lambda started a tradition of assisting with Gamma Psi Omega's annual Ebony Fashion Fair scholarship fundraiser. Nu Lambda members served refreshments and provided coat check for the show's guests, donating the proceeds from their concession stand to UNICEF or the United Negro Fund.

The 90's were busy times for sorors of Nu Lambda Chapter. With 10 years under their belts, the chapter was confident in their ability to create programming unique to their chapter. Nu Lambda began hosting various activities on their respective campuses in efforts to fundraise for worthy causes. Some activities included annual Halloween and Thanksgiving parties where canned foods were collected for admission. Donations were given to the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana and used to prepare baskets for families in need. Other annual events and fundraisers the chapter initiated during the 90's were Black History Month essay contests, calendar sales highlighting notable African-Americans, Carnation Day, bake sales, spring dances in partnership with other Greek organizations, The Marion Home Project, and a tutoring program at the John Will Anderson Boys and Girls Club.

In the new millennium and more recently Nu Lambda has continued to expand their service brand in Northwest Indiana. The chapter participates in service programs that include, nursing home visits, back-to-school drives, study tables, mental health awareness workshops, tax freedom/financial planning workshops, coat drives, Ivy AKAdemy projects, voter registration drives, Pink Goes Red for Heart Health, Walk to End Alzheimer's and support of the Gary Neighborhood Service Center. After the serious matters of service were completed, the chapter also created fun activities on campus like Aka-Robics, Pamper Me Pretty Spa Day, book signings, and '08 minute dating.

As the years progress, Nu Lambda proves to be a chapter with good ideas, great energy and tenacity. Members have excelled by winning chapter awards at regional conferences. In 2000, the chapter won the Carolyn Blanton Overall Chapter Program Achievement Award and the highest GPA award in 2007. Nu Lambda has a strong vision for the future of their chapter and is committed to ensuring its continuity and success in service to all mankind.
